The GIMP releases available from gimp.org and its mirrors contain the source code and have to be compiled in order to be installed on your system. If you do not want to compile the GIMP yourself, there are several sites providing pre-compiled binaries for various platforms. Source for version 2.2 (Stable)

GIMP 2.2.17 is available at ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.2/. You may want to read the Release Notes for GIMP 2.2.

Development version

GIMP 2.4.0-rc3 is a release candidate for the upcoming stable GIMP 2.4 release. The source code is available from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.4/testing/.
